Invertebrates:
The oldest life forms are approximately 3.7 billion years old. In a unknown way, single-celled organisms were formed from chemical reactions in sea water. These were so-called Prokaryotes, which did not have a nucleus yet. The first single-celled organisms with a nucleus (in which the hereditary material, DNA, was concentrated) were formed 2.1 billion years ago, the so-called Eukaryotes. The first multi-cellular animals appeared about one billion years ago. At the end of the Precambrian the first sponges, jellyfish, worms and arthropods were already present. In the Cambrian, a lot of major groups of invertebrates evolved, like trilobites, gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods, brachiopods, cystoids and graptolites. In the Ordovician the corals, eurypterids, bryozoans, crinoids and starfishes appeared. Blastoids and insects evolved in the Silurian, ammonites in the Devonian and belemnites in the Carboniferous.
